Chapter 14

I shove through the shop door and stalk across the room, pausing only to snatch up Kivixl’s wadded up drawing, before slipping into the back room. I return with a jar of seaman’s hand cream and set it on the counter with a thump.

“Half a coin,” I say, staring down at the ledger. How could he? How could he just stand there and watch? How could he let someone do that to me? Am I not his property? Don’t I belong to him? Why didn’t he—

“So...how long have ya been in town?” I jerk my head up and Vaelen gives me a crooked grin. “Couldn’t have been very long, if this is the first I’ve heard of ya.”

“I, er, I think the ship docked on the third. Half a coin, please.”

Vaelen leans his forearms on the edge of the counter. “Nineteen days?” he asks. “Yer here nineteen days before I get to meet ya? Now that’s just criminal.” Nineteen days? Is that all? It feels like a lifetime.

“Didn’t you just say you’ve been on your boat for three weeks?” I ask. “How were we supposed to meet before this?”

Vaelen shrugs. “I got back into port two days ago.”

“Well, Lord Sactaren keeps me very busy,” I say. “In fact, I need to get back to work. The hand cream is half a coin.” Still, he can’t take the hint.

“And what sort of ‘work’ does old Sactaren have ya doing? Lots of manual labor? Got ya on yer hands and knees a lot? Really work up a sweat, do ya? I guarantee you’d have a better time ‘working’ for me.”

“Will you please pay for this and leave?” I say, shoving the jar toward him. His smug smile wavers for a moment, but only just.

“Sure,” he says, then reaches up and rubs his jaw. “Maybe I ought to get something for the bruise I’m going to have in the morning.” I look down at the countertop. “Nah, never mind, it ain’t that bad.” He lays a handful of laenes on the counter. “Keep the change,” he says, grabbing his hand cream and heading for the door. “I...hope I see ya around some time.” Then, thank Maele, he’s gone. I sigh and count out the silver coins. I put the ten for the hand cream in the cash box and the three extra in what Schaff has begun referring to as my ‘tip jar’, even though I have no intention of ever using the money for myself.

I turn around and lean against the counter, staring up at the ceiling. Why was he just watching? I shake my head and step into the back room, where the wadded piece of paper is sitting on the table. Carefully, I try to smooth out the drawing without smudging the charcoal lines. It doesn’t work very well.

“Hey, Lark.” I groan to myself and turn to find Kivixl standing in the doorway, grinning at me. “Schaff wants to see the picture.”

“No I don’t,” Schaff calls from out in the shop.
